How to Establish an SSH Connection to a GNU/Linux Server from Windows

In this tutorial, you will learn how to establish an SSH connection to a GNU/Linux server from Windows as part of your Servers subscription. We will review how to configure the private key on the client machine and then connect to the server.

An SSH connection allows a device to establish an encrypted connection to a remote server through port 22. This makes it possible to manage the server remotes through the command prompt. This tutorial will explain how to configure an SSH connection for remote server administration.

How to establish an SSH connection to a GNU/Linux Server from Windows​?

Before you begin​:

To successfully complete this tutorial, you will need​:

Step 1. Configure the private key on the Windows client

On the Windows client machine, open the programme PuTTYgen and select File Load private key (1).

NOTE: You can download PuTTYgen from the following URL: https://www.puttygen.com/
A window will open in which you will need to select the file with the private key provided in the previous step.
Once loaded, click Save private key (2) and save the generated .ppk file.

For Windows systems, open PuTTY and enter the server IP address in the Host Name field (3) and then enter the Port number (4). Next, click on Auth (5).

Click on Browse (6) and select the .ppk file generated previouslyClick on Open (7).

Lastly, enter the root password, press Enter and you will be connected to the server.
